Modelo Especial — Mexican beers are usually off my radar, mostly because they are usually either too skunky to drink without 3 lime slices, or they are too bland to drink without 3 lime slices. But every now and again, I go south with my beer selection.
Modelo Especial is no exception to the mexican-beer-rule (like the shawn kelly rule). It’s very drinkable, but extremely bland. A little bit of grassy hops grab you at the start, but they fade quickly. It’s not fantastic, or great, or even good really, but it’s fine.
The nose of the beer is very leafy. It smells like sage or basil or some other kind of leafy herb. It’s a little strange, however welcoming, and not quite as strange as the nose of the Pizza Beer I had recently (review coming soon).
Modelo starts off with a somewhat tradition Mexican skunky flavor with hints of grassy hops, smooths out quickly, then loses all flavor completely. This is alright, because the beer goes down easy, but doesn’t do much for it’s flavor. I don’t want to give the impression that this is a horrible beer, because it isn’t. It’s just nothing something I’m going to drink often.
If your looking for something to impress your non-beer drinking friends with, this might just be your ticket. It looks exotic enough to throw them for a loop, but still available at most gas stations, and drinks as easy as Bud-Light.
